In the mid 1830s, German immigrants began buying farmland on the western side of Sheldon Township in Wyoming County, New York. Because so many German families settled there, the area was named Dutch Hollow.
One of the first priorities after building homes, was erecting a church house. Early settlers donated both materials and time to build the first church. St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church was completed around 1840.
In the mid 1840s, a farmer donated a quarter acre of land to be used for a cemetery for the church.
In the 1960s my grandmother gave me a handwritten copy of a family tree that had been started in the 1930s. I still remember standing in the cemetery, amazed at the number of names from her handwritten tree that were found buried side by side in their family units.
The weather has not been kind to some stones so I spent a warm summer's day a few years ago photographing the remaining stones and writing down what I could deciper of the inscriptions.
The comments below are from my computerized family tree file that began with Grandma's handwritten family tree. Some information was given me by generous researchers (Thank You, Scott and Warren!!!), but most information was done the old fashion way, reading roll after roll of microfilm. The Schweyer information, for example, came from a week of learning to read French birth and death registers that were recorded shortly after the French Revolution.
